I fell in love with the idea of painting long before I ever picked up a brush. I was living in New England as a child, when I really noticed the landscape for the first time. It was one of those quintessential fall days: light raking across the fields, the sky a piercing blue, the trees tricked out in all their autumn splendor. I was dazzled. I said, “Someday I’m going to paint all this”.
And now I do. I paint in watercolor, in part due to the range the medium affords. I can paint in translucent washes and multiple glazes, or with thick opaque colors. Watercolor lets me realize that same visceral response, that excitement at light and color, that is the beginning of each of my paintings to this day. Ellen Hopkins Fountain 2021 |
