About Ellen

Mainly a landscape painter, Ellen is attracted to the shapes and color relationships of the earth, especially in the early morning or during the last hour of the day. Her subjects are chosen based on her response to it, such as the way the light rakes across the foreground, or the way the clouds linger in the sky at the end of the day. The landscape never fails to move her.

Ellen is drawn again and again to the imagery along the part of the Hudson near her home. The expanse of the tidal river is bordered on the one side by the Palisades--vertical cliffs of stone and vegetations that bound the river for nearly 20 miles. Together they form a dramatic backdrop for the villages situated along the valley. Time and weather conspire to ensure ever-changing light on these views. The result is a landscape different at all times of the day, every day.

Ellen has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions. Last year she had her most recent solo show with the Allen Sheppard Gallery in New York City. She has received many awards including the “Art of the Northeast Watercolor Award” and the “Winsor & Newton Painting Award”.

Ellen Hopkins Fountain graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Carnegie Mellon University and began her career as a scenic artist. She worked in film, television and theater in venues that ranged from The Santa Fe Opera to Sesame Street. In 1989, she began painting in watercolor.

Fountain is represented by the Allen Sheppard Gallery in New York City and The Green Gallery in Guilford, Connecticut.

Artist's Statement

In painting, I use color to evoke a sense of time and place. Although I often use the Palisades and Hudson River as subject matter, I am more interested in expressing a mood rather than describing a particular place.
